Faq – About Water Aerator System

Laura asks…

Is this a viable idea for pressurized rain water collection system?

I had an idea at work the other day. If I collect rainwater in a large container, say 200 gallons. Can I pressurize it using a windmill that pumps air. My uncle has one that runs an aerator in his lake. Its not much but over time the pressure could build up if its going through a one way valve. I would also put a pressure release to keep the tank from becoming over pressured. The problem I have is how to get rain water in there and not losing air pressure. I could then use the water to flush my toilets and use on my outdoor spickets. Do you think this could work? Do you know how to fix the entering water issue?

Staff answers:

The traditional country way is simpler: Pump the water up into an elevated tank and let gravity do the work after that. A windmill can perform that function. You don’t need much elevation unless you have a dish washing machine.

Spigots. OK?

5,000 gal Koi Pond – water not clear!?

I had my pond professionally cleaned a week ago. I have a waterfall filter system, 3 aerators, and just put in a UV system 3 days ago. When it was cleaned it was drained and powerwashed. I only have 12 koi in this pond. Why is the water not clear?
I did add 3 lilly pads (potted plants) from a very reputable supplier. I also added some floating plants like little lettuces. I wasnt here when he put in the new uv system but it has a blue light at night and a submersed pump. It did rain a little here – perhaps the water just got dirty??

Staff answers:

Make sure your UV bulbs are of adequate size for your pond. What kind of “murk” is it? As in green murk, which would be algae and something the UV filter should take care of; or, brown murk, which would be from sediment. How much sun does your pond get? Any trees or bushes around to drop leaves/needles in it? Oh- MAKE SURE the UV bulbs were installed! It’s not unheard of for someone to accidentally forget to install those after the unit has been put in. Make sure they’re new too. Most UV bulbs have to be replaced about every 6 months to a year.

What kind of filter do you have? Sand filter?

If your filter and everything is working properly, try a coagulant. You can get them at any pond/aquarium shop and they aren’t harmful for fish– they just “clump” sediment, etc., together so your filter can pull it out.

Last and not least– what kind of pond plants do you have? Sometimes if folks use garden soil in pond plants, that stuff gets in the water and murks it up. There is special substrate that can be used for ponds that is heavy and won’t leave the pots. Also, make sure you’re not overfeeding your fish.

Since you mentioned it rained, is it possible the rainwater runoff is getting into your pond?

How to care for septic system?

We recently purchased a home that has a “class 1 aerobic wastewater treatment plant”. The brand name is Louisiana-HOOT. We had it pumped and serviced.. but are realizing our yard floods TREMENDOUSLY. I’ve read that we should “seal” the manholes so excess water doesn’t enter the system.. is covering it with ground cover (dirt) not enough? Should we caulk the manholes with a concrete caulk?
The top of the system is currently clearly visible, we can see the three manholes. Should it all be covered with dirt except for the center manhole which holds up the aerator?? I’ve seen pictures of this and that is how our neighbor’s system appears.

Thanks!

I would contact the following link and ask for advice: http://www.hootsystems.com/systems/louisianahoot.html Sealing with a concrete caulk may make it difficult if the system needs to be accessed. What about sealing the covers with a bath-type (rubbery) sealant which would be easier to unseal? Putting dirt on top just means the flood water would seep through or wash the dirt away. As you don’t want future problems or a disaster, I would get advice from a dealer/manufacturer.
