Faq – About Lawn Aerator

Charles asks…
growing grass?
Hi I was wondering if any could help me out with a question. I read an artical which is very helpful but I am a bit confuse. When spring time comes around if i were to use an aerator at this time than my chances of having crab grass and other weeds will increase ( I plan to use Scott crab grass and weed halter in the the early spring). The back part of my lawn is on a upward slope from the porch to about the middle of the lawn looks great seed came up very good its just that damm slope!! I was planning to run aerator again this sunday 10/21/07 this would give me enough time to try and germanitate seed before the freezing weather. Could you please help me out??
Thanks
think I can help you with this one. It will cost some monies, however, we can reduce and spread the cost over a period of time! I was in charge of Grounds Operations at a Center City University in Philadelphia. Talk about growing grass on a brick!!!
Find a local store that will rent you a Core Aeration

Depends on where you live. If you live in the north, you are too late.
As for the crabgrass and applying preemergent weed killer, if you must wait until spring to seed, then you whould worry about getting the grass to grow first. Aerate, top with composted top soil, don’t cut the grass to short. These steps will reduce the amount of crab grass.

Mark asks…
John Deere: X300 vs X500?
Hi,
I have 1.5 acre with only a few trees, in New England. My backyard is very bumpy and I have a steep hill of ~45 degrees, only 30 feet long. On the side, the hill is only 30 degrees.
I need to buy a riding lawn mower but I am undecided between the X300 and X500.
The main advantage of the X500 is that I can buy some attachments later on (an aerator and a thatcher are the ones I have in mind), but I am not sure it is worth spending so much money (over $5,500) for the possibility of buying only a couple attachments.
I am leaning towards the X300 Series. The 18 hp (Kawasaki engine), 42 inch deck is $3,000…more in my price range. The issue is I am not sure 18 hp may be enough for the hill. However the 22hp comes with a 48 inch deck, which increases the price of the bagger from $400 to $1,000.
I used to have a 155c that I sold a couple years ago: 22 hp, Stratton & Briggs engine with 48 inch deck. It was going up the hill, but with some difficulties, even though I was not mowing.
What do you suggest?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Staff answers:
Forty five degrees is a serious slope. The Tuff Torque K46 transmission in the X300 series is too small to handle that kind of slope on a regular basis. The K72 transmission in the X500 series will be much more comfortable on steep slopes. Plus the X500 has a differential lock pedal to help overcome any traction issues you may have.
