Faq – About Aeration Tank

David asks…
Do guppies need aeration in their tank?
I’ve just had a betta so idk, but the petstore guy said the tank set I bought just needed gravel. It doesn’t have any aeration things but it does have a filter.
Staff answers:
It really depends on the size of your tank and your filter. If the filter u have is stronger than what u need for the tank you have then no you don’t need airation…If it is just what u need not any stronger then yes, it is reccomended that u have an air pump.

Donna asks…
Move 15 large goldfish to our home. Until I can afford a new pond I will put them in tank. Aeration pump kind?
I will use a 200 gal?. cattle tank but want the fish to get enough oxygen. We are moving them from a 4000 gallon pond. Right now $ are short.
Thank you for your answer but I need to know about what kind of aeration pump to install so the fish get enough oxygen. Thanks
Staff answers:
Yes, for a short period of time they can live in a 200 gallon, but minimize the amount of gravel and decorations you add so you can have as close to 200 gallons as possible.
It would also be wise to get a 400 gallon filter (or 2 200 gallon filters) and cycle the tank for a month or so before adding the Goldfish. This will help prevent health issues from the move to a smaller environment.
However, I wouldn’t keep 15 large Golds there for more than 6 months.
EDIT: Oh, I apologize for misreading the question.
I prefer 2 brands: Tetra Whisper is a good one (you can get 2 100 gallon pumps) or the Millionaire pumps by Via aqua. Usually, there should be a Millionaire 600 which I think can do 65+ gallons. Just make sure to not use too large of an air stone or wand as this can kill the pumps quickly. Also, check valves on the tubing is important.

Thomas asks…
explain the significance of TSS in wastewater and in the mixed liquor of activated aeration tank?
Staff answers:
In wastewater effluent, TSS is a simple measure of the solids that are released into the environment (or other system). When released to the environment, solids can disrupt the ecosystem and usually lower the oxygen level in the water as they are eaten by bacteria or they can clog the gills of critters.
But solids are required in the aeration tank, that is how they work. It is a measure of the total bacteria concentration plus and solids that come into the facility. In a municipal system close to 100% of the solids will be bacteria. You measure this by running a VSS test (volatile suspended solids). The VSS is a measure of the bacteria and runs 90-100% of the TSS in municipal systems and 50-95% in industrial systems.
